INTENSE KARTING ACTION AT WPMC REGIONAL ROUND 1 AS RECORD SIZED GRIDS TOOK TO THE TRACK

A scorching summer’s day set the stage for an electrifying opening round of the 2025 Western Province Regional and Club Kart Championships, as local heroes and traveling challengers went wheel to wheel in a high-octane showdown. With the club boasting a record-breaking entry list, the scene was set for a full day of relentless racing action, and the drivers did not disappoint.

With the heat blazing both on and off the circuit, it was all about nailing the perfect setup and keeping a cool head under pressure. The battle for those all-important first wins of the season was fierce, with every driver looking to stamp their authority early. Let’s dive into the action and see who rose to the occasion!

BAMBINO

There’s a new name at the top of the Bambino class in 2025, and it’s Divaaj Govender! The young charger made an early statement by comfortably snatching pole position ahead of Aleena Doutie and Ashlyn Beaumont. But qualifying pace is one thing—converting it into wins is another.

Govender made no mistake in Race 1, charging to victory while Doutie and Beaumont scrapped hard for second. Doutie just edged it, leaving Beaumont to settle for a strong third.

Race 2 was a different story. Doutie and Beaumont turned up the heat, taking the fight to Govender in a thrilling scrap. But despite their best efforts, Govender held his nerve to take another narrow win. The final race, however, was all his. With clean air ahead, Govender cruised to his third win of the day, while Doutie secured second and Emelee Adriaans celebrated a well-earned third place.

With a perfect score, Govender draws first blood in the 2025 title race, but the fight is far from over. Doutie and Beaumont have already shown they’re ready to go toe-to-toe, and with Adriaans, Rofhiwa Ndwambi, and Ryder Roehrig in the mix, this season is shaping up to be an absolute thriller!

MICRO MAX

The Micro Max brigade came out swinging as 13 hungry young chargers hit the track for qualifying, and the timesheets told the story—less than three-tenths of a second covered the top five! When the dust settled, it was Jake Steyn who emerged with pole, but with the field that tight, the fight was far from over.

Race 1 saw Steyn lead the early charge, but in a dramatic twist, he crossed the line third before a nosecone penalty dropped him to P5. That left the door open for Gauteng’s Luhan de Wet to steal the win after a thrilling scrap with Logan Roehrig, who had to settle for second, while Yaqeen Gamieldien bagged third.

Roehrig wasn’t done, though. In Race 2, he found another gear, edging out Gamieldien by less than a tenth of a second to take a nail-biting victory, with de Wet this time in third.

The final race of the day was an all-out brawl, with de Wet coming out on top after an intense front-row battle. Slater Smith surged to second, while Steyn bounced back to claim third.

When the points were tallied, it was de Wet who stood tallest, taking the overall win ahead of Roehrig and Gamieldien. Smith, Steyn, and Radhi Harris rounded out a fiercely competitive top six—setting the tone for what promises to be an action-packed season!

MINI ROK

Max Boshoff wasted no time stamping his authority on the 2025 Mini Rok season, picking up right where he left off with pole position in qualifying. But if he thought it was going to be a walk in the park, Radhi Harris had other ideas. The pair went wheel to wheel in a thrilling Race 1 showdown, with Boshoff just edging it as Harris settled for second, while Logan Roehrig locked in third.

Harris wasn’t backing down. In Race 2, he hit back in style, turning the tables on Boshoff to grab a hard-fought victory, while Zac Boshoff joined the party, slotting into P3 to make it a family affair.

Race 3 was a carbon copy for Wharton, who made it back-to-back wins while the fight for second erupted behind him. Boshoff won that scrap, fending off Ruhan Victor to seal P2.

It was a wild day of Mini Max action—impossible to sum up in just one article, but a clear warning of what’s to come in 2025, both at Regional and National level! Wharton walks away with the first big win of the season, while Boshoff secured second overall, joined by Victor on the podium. Thekiso, Jayden van der Merwe, and Zac Boshoff rounded out a fiercely competitive top six in this star-studded field!

OKN/OKJ

OKN/OKJ delivered fireworks at the season opener, and at the heart of it all was one name—Ethan Lennon. The young ace wasted no time stamping his authority, claiming pole position in qualifying with Onwabile Mcinga and Aleksandar Praizovic keeping him honest.

But once the lights went out, there was no stopping Lennon. Race 1 saw a complete masterclass as he obliterated the field, storming to victory by nearly 15 seconds while shattering the OKN lap record with a blistering 40.439. A stacked grid of 14 Junior Max chargers lined up for the first regional showdown of the year, featuring some of South Africa’s finest young karting talents. And right out of the gate, it was Emma Dowling who laid down the marker, snatching pole position with a scintillating lap in qualifying.

What followed was nothing short of chaos—exactly what we expect from Junior Max! Race 1 was a barnburner, with the stewards kept busy as four penalties were handed out. SENIOR MAX

The 2025 Senior Max season is already shaping up to be an absolute thriller, with 18 of South Africa’s top talents—both local and out-of-town—hitting the track for the first regional showdown. Cape Town’s Luca Wehrli made the first statement of the season, grabbing pole position in a fiercely contested qualifying session.

Race 1 saw Wehrli locked in a head-to-head battle with Gauteng’s Kent Swartz, the two trading blows before Swartz edged ahead to snatch the first victory of the season. Wehrli followed in P2, with the ever-impressive Gianna Pascoal claiming third.

Pascoal wasn’t done yet—Race 2 saw her turn up the heat as she took the fight straight to Wehrli, emerging victorious in a nail-biting finish. Wehrli, ever-consistent, settled for yet another P2, while Senior Max rookie Keagan Beaumont put in a stellar drive to clinch third.

And there was Wehrli once again, making it a hat-trick of P2 finishes, with Pascoal securing her second podium of the day in third.

Wehrli’s relentless consistency paid off, as his trio of second-place finishes handed him the overall win. Pascoal’s strong showing earned her P2 for the day, while Wilson’s late charge put him on the final step of the podium. Senior Max rookie William Marshall had flashes of speed but couldn’t quite find his rhythm in this stacked field, ending P4 ahead of Swartz and another new face in the class, Jordon Wadeley.
